ACL Fest, Day 3

Easily the best day of this year's festival. While I could barely find three bands I loved over the first two days, the first three I saw this day were great: Black Angels, Husky Rescue, and KT Tunstall. The fact that Husky Rescue's lead singer was a hot blonde Finn didn't hurt, nor did KT Tunstall's legs. The photos below came out fine, but the video I shot with the same camera came out dark for some reason:

Rain had come down in buckets as Trish, Brian, and I rode the bus to Zilker Park, but it stopped by the time we got there. The bus ride proved amusing; I got to listen to the drunken ramblings of one guy at the back of the bus who also sang Barry Manilow, while Trish and Brian got to watch his drunken lecherous friend hit on three girls. Oh, and bear in mind that this was before noon on a Sunday.

Most of the rest of the day was a bit cooler and overcast, though the sun came out in the late afternoon to heat things up a bit. And the rest of the bands ranged from eh to great. Damien Marley sounded just like his dad Bob Marley, which made his set a bit boring. Another Marley, same sound. Eh. The many tattooed Patrice Pike rocked her stage, though, as did The New Pornographers.

The Flaming Lips were disappointing; their set was too quiet (a pattern throughout the weekend) and the lead singer talked too much between songs. But Matisyahu was an interesting show; he's a rapper and an Orthodox Jew. From New Jersey. Some of his first songs sounded like Middle Eastern zydeco, if you can picture that. One of the unique acts of the festival, that's for sure.

Then, as threatening clouds crept over the horizon...

...MUSE blew the roof off the joint ... or would have if we weren't already outdoors. Probably the best show all weekend long. They rocked big time.

The highlight should've been the closing act, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers. But once again, the show was plagued by too low levels on the sound, even though some bands earlier were louder.

Then after only about 4-5 songs, the rain hit, and all of our group bailed.

But as Trish, Brian, and I were about to get into their truck, we heard a roar erupt from those that were left in the park. Turned out, Petty went back on stage and finished his set. But we were too tired and wet to head back in. So, kind of a disappointing end to the entire weekend, but still, overall a strong finish after a weak first two days.

KT Tunstall? I am SO very jealous of you! She's my favorite singer of the moment. I really love her album. I bet I'd have liked Aimee Mann too.

That's too bad about Petty. I used to be a big Petty fan actually. He's a good song-writer...
